Essi Kausalainen (b.1979) studied performance art and performance theory at Turku Arts Academy and the Theater Academy of Finland. Since 2000 Kausalainen has performed in numerous festivals around the world (Europe, Asia, America), and has had three solo exhibitions in Helsinki (2007, 2008 and 2010).

Since 2009, plants and other living creatures have been the centre of her artistic practice. Kausalainen explores the human body and the relationship between body and space, body and vegetation. She is interested in the physical experience of life – how the body interacts with its surroundings – as well as the relationship between human being, nature and culture. Kausalainen’s performances are usually conducted at a slow pace with the aim of focussing her own, as well as the audience’s senses and their experience of the interaction between performer and environment.
